Biodiversity Action Plan

Rush Pasture

Rush pasture on the Warslow Estate photo: Karen ShelleyRush pasture includes mires and wet grasslands around the upper stretches of rivers and on the moorland fringe sections of the South West Peak and Dark Peak.

These areas are often dominated by rushes and marshy plants or species-poor grassland. They provide good insect populations which are an important food source for wading birds such as lapwing, curlew and snipe.

The action plan for rush pasture has been dropped due to difficulties in defining and mapping the resource. Those areas which are important botanically will be addressed though the Unimproved Pastures action plan, and those which are important for breeding birds will be picked up through the species action plans. Others will no longer be considered a BAP priority.
